Communication and Outreach Support Services

Challenge

The NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) serves as a critical interface for the biomedical research community, providing the corporate framework for NIH research administration. With responsibilities spanning policy development, electronic systems for staff, and outreach to over 100,000 investigators worldwide, OER faces the challenge of disseminating accurate, timely information about grants, policies, processes, and systems. This requires a robust communication strategy to engage diverse stakeholders effectively, including researchers, administrators, and policymakers.

Solution

RP provides comprehensive program management, website support, communications, and outreach services to OER. Our dedicated team develops a wide range of communication products, including website content, social media posts, webinars, FAQs, videos, and podcasts, to ensure consistent and transparent dissemination of information. We identify key communication opportunities, streamline information delivery, and enhance user engagement through effective branding, UX strategy, and content management systems. Additionally, RP assists with application development and the implementation of new technologies.

Outcome

RP’s support has significantly enhanced OER’s communication and outreach capabilities. The introduction of the NovoEd virtual learning platform has fostered a collaborative learning environment, enabling real-time interaction among students, instructors, and NIH leaders. We implemented advanced usability testing and user-centric communication strategies to improve user interaction and satisfaction. Our development of key websites has raised awareness and facilitated access to information, supporting OER’s mission of providing timely and accurate information to the biomedical research community.

Usability Enhancement and Navigation Optimization

Challenge

The NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) needed to improve the usability of its scientific data sharing website. The existing navigation structure was cumbersome and unintuitive, making it difficult for users to efficiently find and interact with the necessary information. This issue led to low user satisfaction and engagement, hindering the website’s effectiveness in disseminating critical data to a diverse audience that includes researchers, administrators, and policymakers. The challenge was to create a more user-friendly interface that would enhance accessibility and improve the overall user experience.

Solution

RP conducted extensive usability testing to identify pain points in the website’s navigation and user interface. We developed two overall navigation designs and conducted Tree Testing with over 100 user participants to evaluate their navigability and findability. The feedback collected was used to refine the navigation structure, ensuring it aligned with user needs and expectations. Additionally, we implemented advanced usability testing techniques to continually gather user feedback and make iterative improvements, ensuring a consistently enhanced user experience.

Outcome

The redesigned navigation structure significantly enhanced user findability and interaction, leading to a marked increase in user satisfaction and engagement. The improved website now facilitates easier access to scientific data, enabling researchers and other stakeholders to efficiently locate and utilize the information they need. This enhancement has not only strengthened OER’s ability to support the biomedical research community with timely and accurate data but also improved overall workflow efficiency for users. By providing a more user-friendly interface, OER has been able to advance NIH’s overarching goals.
